Each computer that’s connected to the Internet has an allocated IP address. DNS allows people to have their own personal domain names that correspond to their computers IP address, making it easier to remember names such as www.silkstream.net rather than 193.119.128.38.

The domain names or fully qualified domain names (FQDNs) are all kept with their matching IP addresses, on distributed databases around the world. When you entered www.silkstream.net into your browsers URL panel, a connection was made to one or many of these databases requesting www.silkstream.net be resolved to its respective IP address. When the name was resolved it was sent back to your computer and a connection was made with the Silkstream web server. All this toing and froing happens at near the speed of light, so you would never really know all the hard your PC has done just to display this web page on your screen!
